Mr. Leo's Mini-English Lesson #3

Tomorrow we will do some work with modal auxilliaries. (Some people say "helping verbs" but the modern word is modal.) The modals are can, could, may, might, would, should, had better, must, will, and would. They have many meanings such as ability, permission, possibility, necessity etc. Most of the modals have more than one meaning. There are a few rules concerning their use. One rule is the main verb NEVER ends in an "s". Example: Betty can SPEAK English.......not Betty can speakS English. BE IN CLASS TOMORROW TO LEARN MORE.

  1. Lilia,
That means do not put an "s" on the third person singular of a present tense verb when we use a modal. For example: She can speak English....not..She can speaks English. Without the modal, EVERY third person singular verb in the PRESENT tense only has an "s": She speaks English.
